Week 8 - Learning to Love Leviticus

I hope you are trekking along through the Psalms and the One Year Bible with me here in 2009. If you are - AWESOME! If you aren't - why not start with today's reading? Either way, we are at the threshold of triumph or disaster for many. Tomorrow we begin the book of Leviticus. It is perhaps one of the most misunderstood books in the Bible.

Let me encourage you, right now, to stop and read the following article which I have found most helpful and inspiring at this point in my One Year Bible - Learning to Love Leviticus, by Bob Deffinbaugh , Th.M.

May God continue to bless you as you read and apply His eternal Word!

Week 4 - Reading Trek Update

Week 4 - Here we go! It's been a great week in God's Word. I hope you've experienced God in a fresh way. Just this week I was reminded by a friend how important it is to be a good observer when you read. Don't just skim through it; take time to read for comprehension. Good observation is the first step toward understanding, application, and life change.

I hope you have an amazing week in God's Word. I am praying for each of you who read this post. May God continually pour His blessings into your life through His sustaining Word.

Week 3 - Reading Trek Update

Week 3 - Here we GO! I hope you are starting to gain some confidence and momentum in your daily devotions or quiet-times. Reading God's Word and praying everyday has truly revolutionized my life.

As a matter-of-fact, to live a God centered, Christ exalting, fruit bearing life without reading the Bible and praying everyday would be like a scuba diver diving without his oxygen tank - utterly impossible. We need His eternal Word to sustain us each day.

Spiritual disciplines are formed just like habits. Keeps working on it everyday. Strive for consistency. The best thing to do is to make a regular date with God. Set the time and place and SHOW UP! If you can't seem to make that happen then I recommend you start with the suggestions below or (ever better) make some for yourself.

Come up with some non-negotiable helpful ideas to strengthen your devotional habits like...
  • I will not watch TV without first reading my Bible.
  • I will not get out of bed without first praying.
  • I will not eat breakfast/lunch/supper without first reading my Bible.
  • I will not crank up the car without first praying.
  • I will not read the news paper/internet newsreader without first reading my Bible.
Feel free to share your ideas in the comment area here on the blog or via email. I'd love to know what helps you the most.

Week 2 - Reading Trek Update

I hope you've had an amazing first week in the One Year Bible. Remember it's a marathon not a sprint, so take it steadily - one day at a time.

If you've never attempted this before then it's likely that you will fall behind at some point in the journey (you may already be behind). That being the case here's a bit of advice from someone who has experienced this same thing: "If you are more than one or two days behind in your readings just skip ahead to today's reading and don't fret. You can read those sections next year." Another good option is to set aside a portion of time to catch up perhaps on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

This week (like every week) will cover some amazing texts including:

(Genesis)
  • The Tower of Babel
  • God's Covenant with Abram
  • Sodom and Gomorrah
  • The Birth of Isaac
  • Abraham is tested

(Matthew)
  • Jesus' Temptation
  • The Sermon on the Mount
  • Many Miraculous Healings

(Psalms)
  • many authentic expressions of worship including one of my favorite Psalms: Psalm 8

(Proverbs)
  • Practicle Wisdom including Proverbs 3:5-7

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil."

Today we begin the last full week of the 2008 NEW TESTAMENT readings. The finish-line, of course, is next Wednesday December 31. And, it is then and there that you and I will need to make a choice. What next? I am planning to read the entire Bible in 2009 along with our church, First Baptist Church of Trussville, but I've not determined exactly how I intend to blog (Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, Proverbs, all, or any of the above, or something other).

Either way, I have a week to decide and we have some great readings in Revelation to wade in. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas as we celebrate the birthday of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

ONE YEAR BIBLE 2009 (Great Links!)

Now is a great time to decide to read the entire Bible in 2009. It may seem like a daunting task, but I promise you will not regret it, especially if you take time now to begin praying about it and searching out some helpful resources. Did you know that with about 15 minutes each day you could read all 66 books of the Bible in one year? (That's a small library!)

Reading God's Word has had a profound impact on my everyday life. There are many reading plans and strategies at your disposal, but the one I have enjoyed the most is the OneYear Bible reading plan by Tyndale. In it you will read some of the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs each day. It has worked well for thousands of people, and it is the plan my church (FBC Trussville) is following in 2009.

As my church is planning to do a church wide reading and preaching initiative through the One Year Bible in 2009, I have come across some great free online tools to help in the daily readings. I hope they will serve as a catalyst in your reading and study of God's Word.
