Adultery Begins in the Mind

Jesus challenged his followers by telling them “anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28) This means that the act of adultery is more than an act; it is also a thought. God knows that the act of adultery begins in the mind and He wants to arm us with the knowledge that the only way to truly avoid committing adultery is to guard our minds.

If our thoughts are allowed to wander on ungodly things, then our actions are soon to follow and in doing so our thoughts will drag us away from walking close to God. Paul challenged the church by telling them to “take captive every thought.” (2 Corinthians 10:5) We should always keep our thoughts on a tight leash.

Today, take time to evaluate your thought life. Write down the top five things you think about when you are alone. Weigh them carefully. Ask God to help you overcome any temptation you may be experiencing in your thought life.
