"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
The weight of the first phrase of Romans 12:2 cannot be overstated. "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world." What does this mean to you? Are you trying to fit in with your neighbors or colleagues? How far are you willing to go? Where do you draw the line? Here is a questions to consider: Is it OK to sacrifice having a healthy family on the altar of economic status?
This is just one example of how well meaning Christians can ruin their families simply by failing to draw the line. Enough is enough. Don't be deceived; the pattern of the "world", especially here in the United States, is to pursue wealth and beauty with such reckless abandon that we hardly have time to breathe much less invest large amounts of quality time into what matters most - loving God and loving people. We must recognize what is truly at stake. If we are going to be faithful to the text of the Bible we cannot just skim over Romans 12:2 with out checking our priorities. How are you doing? The most encouraging part for me is the answer that follows, "but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." This is the antidote to our sickness of chasing the world.
Today, take a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself, "Am I spending my time on what matters most?" Now, open a Bible and turn to Romans 12 and ask God to let it be a mirror for you. Ask Him to show you what needs to change in your mind and your life today so that His reflection will shine through you.

A good and timeless word! How true your statement that as a culture and even as the Body of Christ, wealth and beauty are pursued with reckless abandon and the important things are neglected. And you are right that loving God and loving people should consume large amounts of quality
time. The old saying goes that on their deathbed no one has ever said "I wish I had spent more time at the office( or more money on a house, was better looking, or had more stuff etc). NOW is the time to attend to the only 2 things that will matter. Loving God and loving people. Romans 12:1 should be our life's motto. Thanks B.J.
