Psalm 24:7-10 (NIV)
Lift up your heads, O you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty,
the LORD mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is he, this King of glory?
The LORD Almighty—
he is the King of glory.
Psalm 24 culminates with a fascinating exchange of words. Perhaps this song was used in the temple much like a responsive reading would be used in public worship today or acted out in dramatic form. One group outside the temple would call out "Open up, you ancient doors, that the King of Glory may come in!" Then another group from inside the temple would respond, "Who is this King of Glory?" Followed by the unison declaration from outside, "The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle." Then the exchange took place a second time. Followed by the bursting open of the temple doors to symbolize the entrance and presence of the LORD Almighty - King of Glory!
Regardless of how this psalm was used in ancient times, it serves as a great catalyst for our right worship of God today. Not only does worship begin with our recognizing God as our holy creator (see Psalm 24:1), it also begins with the shifting of our minds attentions and our hearts affection to Jesus Christ the King of Glory. The imagery used here serves as a magnificent foreshadowing of the Christ's future entry into the new Jerusalem and reign forever. (see Revelation 21:1-8)
Take the next six minutes or more and truly worship the Savior while enjoying this great video from the band Third Day called "King of Glory."
