Should We all Make the Ultimate Sacrifice?

Stephen was among the first Christian martyrs after the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Today we read his story in Acts chapter seven. Stephen was a man full of the Holy Spirit. He spoke the truth with boldness even in the face of persecution. And, he made the ultimate sacrifice because of his willingness to witness for Christ.

The summary of his message to the Jewish leaders was "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it." (Acts 7:51-53)

The Jewish leaders did not respond to his comments favorably. In fact, they drug him out of town and stoned him to death. Should we all make this ultimate sacrifice? Well, we may not have to, but take a closer look at what Steven actually did. He just witnessed for Christ. Isn't that what we have been commanded to do? Go and make disciples of all nations. Be his witnesses to the ends of the earth (Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 1:8) . If witnessing for Christ cost us our lives so be it! When I gave my life to Jesus that is exactly what I did - I gave it all!

Today, as an act of worship, join me in thanking God for the faithful witness of Stephen and his willingness to witness to those who had the power to reject his message and take his life. Praise God that they had no power over his soul. May we be completely surrendered to him as we go about our day, and faithfully witness as the Lord gives us opportunities.
