Hewbrews: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Jesus Christ

Today's full reading: Hebrews 1:1-14

"The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs." (Hebrews 1:3-4 NIV)

Today we begin an eighteen day reading journey through the book of Hebrews. So grab your Bible and join us by starting with chapter one. Hebrews was written primarily to Jewish readers who were converting to Christianity. We are not sure who the author of this letter is, but they were definitely writing to a Jewish audience.

The theme and purpose of Hebrews is that Jesus Christ has fulfilled the law (or Old testament) and put in it's place a new covenant in which he himself is the priest and perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus is superior to Angels, Moses, the Old Covenant, and Aaron and the priestly succession.

As I read these verses, today, I am compelled to ask myself if Jesus is on the throne of my life. Is Jesus the object of my affections? Do I truly worship Christ? Do I give honor to his name, which is superior by far than every other name in all creation?

Today, as an act of worship, honor the name of Christ above every name by using it only in absolute seriousness. His name should not be used lightly. Praise God for making a way that we can be saved apart from our good works.
