It can be a challenge for all people. As part of our sinful nature we mess up, but at some point we must make the decision to keep our word. My grandfather spoke of a time when a man could buy a house on a hand shake. That must have been a different world. Can you really imagine that?
The Bible says, “keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.” I can remember as a young teenager being very sick. Actually, I can remember several times I was so sick that I began to fervently pray asking the Lord to heal me. As part of my prayer I would confess sin and make multiple commitments to the Lord. I committed to do all kinds of things if He would heal me. And every time He did. That’s right the pain stopped, the fever broke, all the other symptoms left and I went on with my life. My healing was never with some mysterious angelic touch or public spectacle, and it may have taken minutes, hours, or even days, but never the less I was certainly healed.
Often I would find a way to keep my promises, but there were also times when I did not. It was these times when I felt so ashamed. God did not require me to make all those promises to Him, yet He does expect me, as a believer, to keep my word. And He expects no less from you either. Today, I pray you will keep your word. It is the right thing to do!
