Ownership Is The Issue

In Matthew 5:38-42 Jesus teaches about responding to people who mistreat us. His general position is to kill them with kindness! That’s right, “turn the other cheek,” “give away your coat,” and "go the second mile.” But for me the challenge really begins to come alive in the final verse. “Give to the one who asks you, and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.” As it turns out, if we have a problem with letting people borrow our stuff we have an ownership issue.

God gives us good things. The Bible says in James 1:17 that, “every good and perfect gift is from above” meaning from God. Jesus' generosity toward everyone He came in contact with gives us a clear example to follow. We should learn to be generous with our giving. Practically speaking, we should hold everything we have with a loose grip always looking for God to use us to bless others.

Our worship challenge for today is: Be willing to let God use you and your possessions to bless other people. Remember that we are just travelers here on earth and regardless of who claims something as their own everything belongs to the Lord.
