The Undiagnosed Addiction to Worry

Have you noticed that people are more worried today than ever? Most of our lives have never been more complicated. Each day we become more and more concerned about the issues surrounding our jobs and relationships. Often the pressures of a modern family can completely wear out even the strongest of persons. Although it’s easy to worry about big things such as marriages, jobs, or money management, it’s often the multitude of little things that absolutely overwhelm us. Some common things people worry about range from home repairs and car problems to after school games and what’s for dinner. Today’s teens experience an ever-increasing demand for their time as well.

Worry can easily become an addiction and can cause many heath and emotional problems such as: rapid pulse, a feeling of breathlessness, trembling, sweaty palms, dry mouth, chest pains, digestive problems – nausea/diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache, sleeplessness, stomach ache, feelings of helplessness, difficulty with making decisions, a lack of self-confidence, difficulty concentrating, panic attacks, and obsessive behavior (such as repeatedly checking that the oven is switched off)

Is there anything we can do to cope with the increasing problem of worrying? The answer is yes. Jesus says:

“Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear...But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

- Matthew 6:25,33-34 (HCSB)

We must turn our worries over to God and trust in His strength to help us. He wants us to cast our cares upon Him. Whatever it is that we worry about is no match for the power of God. He is more than enough to handle our problems.
