Entangled By The American Dream

Followers of Jesus must serve God whole heartedly without being entangled by the cares of this world. The American Dream, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” can mean many things, but often lead us down a path chasing after material gain such as: houses, cars, businesses, jobs, hobbies, recreation, and retirement.

Jesus was upfront and personal with the crowds that followed Him throughout His ministry; He did not beat around the bush when outlining His expectations of them. In the middle of Matthew chapter eight (8:18-22), Jesus gave an order for everyone to go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, but for some this did not go down well. They had other things on there calendars and other obligations that they felt were more important. Thus we are at the root of today’s teaching: PRIORITIES!

What obligations have we made that would hinder us from obeying a direct order from God? We, as Christ followers, must operate much like soldiers in an army. Soldiers cannot entangle themselves in civilian matters to the point of hindering them from fulfilling their first obligation to their commander.

Today, as an act of worship, join me in renewing our pledge of service to God. Lord, You are my number one, my commanding officer. You have the right to instruct me and teach me. You know what is best for me. I will serve You anywhere, anytime, in anyway. Use me for Your glory!

Food for thought and comment: What are the biggest obstacles people face when first turning to Christ? What obstacles were the most challenging for you?
