The Kingdom: Talk or Power?

Today's full reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-21

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power." (1 Corinthians 4:20 NIV)

This statement comes at a very interesting place in chapter four of 1 Corinthians. Paul has just described the life of an apostle with words detailing the harsh persecution they face. Then he warns his readers about those among them who are arrogant. The decisive statement to them could perhaps be said this way: Those who are arrogant better have a change of heart. Their confidence in the flesh is out of line. It's one thing to talk a big talk about how you do or do not live, but the real life in Christ is one not of talk but of power - power to tow the line, power to lay down your life completely, power to surrender ALL.

Today, as an act of worship, thank God for demonstrating the surrendered life for us. Praise him for his faithfulness to supply all our needs.

"May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Galatians 6:14 NIV)
