“We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.” (1 Corinthians 2:12 NIV)
There is and I suppose has always been the prevailing thought that the best or most important part about salvation is the “get out of Hell free card”. Many people who have become believers have given their lives to Christ, receiving his gift of salvation, because they did not want to be eternally damned. This was certainly the first reason I chose to follow Christ, and as far as I am concerned it is a pretty good reason.
However, among other benefits that come with the free gift of salvation is perhaps the most important one to be experienced in this life: the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. To avoid eternal damnation is a great and wonderful benefit to be experienced after this life has been lived and is over, but the greatest benefit for the here and now is the filling of the Holy Spirit of God and walking in a daily relationship with the Father.
Today, as an act of worship, let us thank God for sending his Spirit to counsel and guide us into all truth (John 16:12-13). May we seek to obey the Spirit as he teaches us each day more and more what it means to walk with God.
