Today's full reading: Philippians 3:4-21
"But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith." (Philippians 3:7-9 NIV)
Paul had much to boast about in his "self-righteousness", at least in human terms. If righteousness could be attained by following the Old Testament law Paul would have been considered righteous by most Jews. Yet, he made the conscience decision not to boast in self but to boast in Christ. Why? Because Paul understood that following the Old Testament law only made temporary atonement for our sin, but Christ sacrifice served to purchase our atonement forever. Philippians chapter three is an amazing passage of scripture. It is worth the read.
Today, as an act of worship, praise God for offering us righteousness through Christ's sacrifice. Worship God for his free gift of salvation. Ask God to help you boast in him more and not in yourself.
