Priests and the Need For Christ

Today's full reading: Hebrews 7:1-17

"If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come—one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron?" (Hebrews 7:11 NIV)

When I first read this passage I was left with more questions than answers. Who is this Melchizedek guy anyway? Where did he come from and where did he go? The Bible is pretty clear that he was "king of Salem and priest of God Most High". And that, I think, is the main point! He was king and priest. The reason we needed a guy like Melchizedek is because we was king and priest.

Today, as an act of worship, come before the King of Kings and the Great High Priest, Jesus Christ. Praise him for (as priest) offering the perfect atoning sacrifice for our sins, his body. Praise him for the promise of his earthly reign (as King of Kings) which is to come.
