Betrayal and Being Thankful (Psalm 55)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 16:41-18:32 ~ Mark 16:1-20 ~ Psalm 55:1-23 ~ Proverbs 11:7

Psalm 55 is a personal lament where the worshiper cries out to the Lord for rescue and help after dealing with the betrayal of a close friend and companion. Something to keep in mind is that although this psalm was written by or about King David, it is not necessarily autobiographical - speaking of specific people, places, and situations.

The Biblical Psalms are hymns written to facilitate genuine worship from a variety of life situations. We are commanded to be thankful in all circumstances, yet the isolation of betrayal is a most painful and lonely place in which to offer our thanks.

1 Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea;

2 hear me and answer me.
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught

12 If an enemy were insulting me,
I could endure it;
if a foe were raising himself against me,
I could hide from him.

13 But it is you, a man like myself,
my companion, my close friend,

14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship
as we walked with the throng at the house of God.

22 Cast your cares on the LORD
and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous fall.

23 But you, O God, will bring down the wicked
into the pit of corruption;
bloodthirsty and deceitful men
will not live out half their days.
But as for me, I trust in you.

Psalm 55:1-2, 12-14, 22-23

Betrayal is not an isolated event but is widespread and something that most of us will experience. It is encouraging to know that Jesus can identify with this bitter reality of life. Today, as an act of worship, be thankful for even the painful and difficult situations you experience. Pray especially for those who are in the midst of betrayal right now - that they might become better, not bitter.
