One of the largest steps you can take in your walk with Christ is learning to maintain a godly thought life. There are no tricks, short cuts, or fancy slogans, just a powerful verse of scripture and a habit to cultivate into your lifestyle. I call this “The Philippians 4:8 Rule.”
A verse to help you understand what God wants you to think about is Philippians 4:8. It says, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”
Think about things that are:
- True
- Noble
- Right
- Pure
- Lovely
- Admirable
- Excellent
- Praiseworthy
The habit you need to cultivate until it becomes an everyday part of your life is learning to weigh your thoughts. Otherwise known as “The Philippians 4:8 Rule”. It is the process of filtering what you think about.
Step #1) Start with a prayer asking God to show you the buzz words that will alert you to an ungodly thought. Very quickly in your mind scroll through the sin thought list. (ex. gossip, hatred, pride, selfishness, pornography…)
Step #2) Now ask God to alert you through His Holy Spirit anytime you begin to think about these things.
Step #3) Immediately begin thinking about Philippians 4:8.

My thought life, it my biggest challenge, however, I have decided that Jesus not only wants to have control over this issue, He is fully capable of conquering this battle. I know that this will take more than just a simple prayer, I might have to sleep with the Bible on my pillow! Nevertheless, I have committed myself to the task. Please pray for me as I turn my mind completely over to the Lord. I doubt anyone will notice a change, but I know that once Jesus has control over my thoughts, I will have much more peace.
I too struggle with my thought life. But as you said “Jesus is fully capable of conquering this battle.” I'll go even further and say according to God's word. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I'll be praying for you today.
