“The Road Not Taken,” by Robert Frost, is a very well known poem. It accounts the story of a traveler who, among other things, understands the impact of making a critical decision to take one path instead of another.
Being a follower of Jesus presents a similar challenge. We must make the decision to take the road less traveled. Jesus says, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
It can be very difficult at times to choose the narrow path, because so many of our friends, family members, and co-workers may be walking down a completely different path. And therein lies the challenge: live counter culture; go against the grain! Popular culture will lead us astray from the narrow path that Jesus wants to guide us along.
As an act of worship, today, let us live counter culture by honoring God with our words and actions in our homes, on our jobs, in our relationships, at our schools, and everywhere we go in-between.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
- Taken from “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost (1920, Mountain Interval)
Food for thought and comment: I'm looking for some of your thoughts on how to live counter culture. What are some of the ways you have attempted to live counter culture? What major challenges might a person face when taking the road less traveled?
