Take the Initiative in Prayer

After reading in Matthew, I was taken back at how much God really wants to hear from us. As a father myself, I was moved by Jesus’ illustration; “What man among you, if His son asks him for bread would give him a stone?” (Matthew 7:9)

God is the ultimate Father and looks after the needs of all His children. He wants us to grow into mature godly people, and one of the disciplines we must learn is dependence on Him.

Even though God already knows what we need, want, and what we are going to ask for, He still wants us to bring our petitions to Him. He clearly says, “Keep asking and it will be given to you. Keep searching and you will find. Keep knocking and the door will be opened to you.” (Mathew 7:7)

Unlike the way we typically would raise our children to be independent, God wants us to remain dependant on Him. He wants us to walk by faith and not by sight.

When it comes to communication God has already done the lion’s share of His part by giving us His written word, carefully preserved through the centuries, which means the ball is in our court. It’s time to take the initiative and speak up. If we are wise we will come to our heavenly Father often every day with the burdens on our minds and hearts.

Today, as an act of worship let’s simply speak to the Lord. Ask of Him and He will answer. Wherever you are, God can hear you because he wants to hear from you. Will you join me as we call out to him?
